Runways 9/27 at Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport (TMB) in Miami are being lengthened to 6000 feet. The project is expected to be complete by late 2011.

The runway extension is part of a series of improvements being made at the airport.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Daytona Beach held a conference last week that was attended by executives from major aviation and space companies including Boeing, Gulfstream, and Lockheed Martin, along with local business leaders, elected officials, and former FAA administrator Marion Blakey.

The event included a tour of the site of a proposed 90-acre aviation research park, which could potentially employ 2000 engineers and researchers.

ERAU also showed off some of its current research, including its role in developing a new national air traffic control system at the old Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) terminal.

Charlotte County Airport renamed

July 16, 2010

Yesterday the Charlotte County Airport Authority voted 4-0 to change the airport’s name to Punta Gorda Airport, apparently because some people don’t know where Charlotte County is.
No word yet on what to do about people who don’t know where Punta Gorda is.

Daily nonstop Gainesville-Miami flights coming this fall

Herlong Airport holds aviation camp for kids

Last weekend, Herlong Airport (HEG) in Jacksonville held a two-day summer camp for kids. The camp included sessions in a $120,000 full-motion flight simulator and a ride on the runway. The kids also got to visit the control tower at Craig Municipal Airport (CRG).

Citrus County upgrades airports

Citrus County is in the process of upgrading its two airports. The runway at Inverness Airport (X40) is currently being lengthened from 3762 to 5000 feet to accommodate small jets. The airport is getting all-new lighting, an automated weather system (AWOS), a new terminal and a maintenance hangar.

Panama City area pilots look for alternative airport

Fuel price at Flagler County Airport falls to all-time low

Flagler County Airport (XFL) has cut its price for self-serve avgas to $3.58 per gallon, one of the lowest prices for aviation fuel in Florida.

Hernando County Airport to get control tower

July 12, 2010

Construction of a control tower is set to begin in December or January at Hernando County Airport (BKV) in Brooksville. The tower is expected to open in 2012 or 2013.
Members of the aviation authority and the county commission have questioned the need for the tower based on the number of operations at the airport.

EAA awards scholarships to teens at Fernandina Beach

Last week, Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 943 awarded its first $1000 aviation scholarships to two teenagers at its meeting at Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport (FHB). The scholarship program was created to encourage young people to pursue careers in aviation, and the recipients were chosen from Nassau County high schools.
